Elizabeth Blackwell’s book, “A Curious Herbal”, was first issued in weekly parts between 1737 and 1739, and contained about 500 engraved images of medicinal plants. It was both a passion project and a desperate bid by its author to release her husband from a debtors’ prison. Rumor has it that her husband was also her second cousin.
